Flavigny and the surrounding area

Flavigny is one of the most beautiful and historic villages in Burgundy. Perched high above the Ozerain valley, the village is surrounded by an almost completely preserved medieval wall. The narrow streets, varied stone structures, gates, stairways, walls and small squares constantly reveal new perspectives. Light and shadow change noticeably throughout the day, transforming the village into a lively open-air workspace. Many of the locations are quiet and secluded – perfect for concentrated work at your own pace.

The heart of the village is the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre, whose origins date back to the 8th century. Today, its rooms house the world-famous aniseed factory, where Anis de Flavigny has been produced since the 19th century. A visit here is not only an insight into regional cultural heritage, but also a journey through history, craftsmanship and fragrance.

Despite its tranquillity, Flavigny is lively and authentic. A traditional baker supplies the village with fresh bread and pastries, and a small village shop offers everyday essentials. Two restaurants – a cosy auberge and a restaurant serving regional cuisine – invite you to enjoy Burgundy's culinary culture and relax at the end of the day.

Flavigny is nestled in the rolling hills of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, surrounded by fields, forests and small valleys. The region is rich in history and cultural highlights. Nearby is Alésia, the historic site of the famous battle between Caesar and Vercingetorix (also known from the Asterix comics). Also within easy reach are the Abbaye de Fontenay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and masterpiece of Cistercian architecture, and the Château de Bussy-Rabutin, famous for its extraordinary portraits and the sharp-tongued inscriptions of its former owner.
