history
The history of Flavigny dates back to 52 BC. During the historic battle against the rebellious Gauls, Julius Caesar had his main camp set up on the hills of Flavigny. After the successful victory against Vercingetorix, the war veteran Flavinius built a Roman villa, which was decisive in giving Flavigny its name.
In the 8th century, Carolingian monks settled in the area and established a long tradition of monastic culture in Flavigny. Two hundred years later, the magnificent era of the Duchy of Burgundy began. In the late Middle Ages, the Burgundian state was one of the largest territories in Europe, and countless castles and palaces still bear witness to this unique history today. Many medieval buildings have also been preserved in Flavigny, and the town's fortifications are still visible in many places.
